The above video is a fuller version of the sermon where Jeremiah Wright says "God damn America". Wright says this after a long discourse on how governments can change. As an example, he praises the presidency of Bill Clinton and then decries that of George W Bush.

The above video is a fuller version of the sermon where Wright quotes someone else as saying "America’s chickens have come home to roost". The sermon focuses on what the response to the attacks of September 11th should be.

Speaking of context, the above picture apparently shows First Lady Hillary Clinton sitting with Reverend Jeremiah Wright on September 11, 1998 at the White House. They are watching President Bill Clinton confess his sins to a group of clerics gathered two days after the Ken Starr report was released. The picture is from the Associated Press. If someone digs up the original uncropped picture, let me know

lirun, the full sermons add a lot of context to his quotes. Whether one agrees with Reverend Wright or not, it seems to me that he has been unfairly demonized to make a media controversy. These sermons were reported on in the New York Times in August of last year. However, when it hit the news last week, the media breathlessly made it sound like all this was “new”.
However, I am very impressed by how Obama dealt with this “controversy”. He showed his chops and his leadership ability. He met the “controversy” head on and turned what was supposed to be a smear into a national conversation on race relations. I think last week has actually made his candidacy stronger.

Where can I find the complete text of Rev Wrights speech? So much is taken out of context, we need to be able to read the whole thing, unedited by the press.

I listened to each video. Hasn’t changed my opinion at all. Why is a minister of God (ha ha, should I say so-called minister of God) talking race, race, race, politics…not one mention of Christ or salvation or love? He isn’t any minister of God. He gave an award to his good buddy Farakhan. The guy who we all know is filled with love for whites and Jews. Wright said Christ was a black man (Duh??) How in the world can anyone respect or support this man? He is going to bring Obama down in the general election, if Clinton doesn’t win. The majority of Americans will suspect, as I do, Obama’s close association with Wright. He is a hate mongerer…birds of a feather flock together.

I am a Black female Pastor of 13 years.
Many have never visited a Black church but yet they are experts now.
Many assume that you do not have any thinking people in the congregation. That is to say that everything the Pastor says is “gospel.” If people believed everything the Pastor/Preacher said we would have no need for jails and prisons. We would have a model nation. Thank you!

We can condemn Fox News and any other organization that chooses to malign Reverend Wright. However, we must recognize that some people in America truly do not want to hear the truth. Yet, for those who do want to hear it their hearts shall be softened so understanding grows in the like an evergreen tree. We must remember too that vanilla is good for seasoning but on its owns it is offensive to taste. Truth is the vanilla of that makes a pie taste better and for sure African Americans have eaten much humble pie. In the language of the lost art of Urim and Thummim “God damn America” is the same as “How long Father?”. Both have the same value as “Gomorrah”. What we have to ask ourselves is why have the older generation of White America not evolved spiritually?
We are in the wilderness. Exodus tells us that the oldest generation had to die out before the wandering Hebrews learned to rely fully on “The Lord God.”
We are very close. We are very close to the death of fear and the birth of true hope and judgment. Yam Suph. Judgment Day. Watch. Watch and pray.

This is specially in response to annie c’s post. i think that you need to read up on liberation theology and the historical context under which it was born. Also, i believe you need to look for the whole speech. It seems to me from your comment that you are stuck on presumptions fed by the media to inflame the racism that does exist in this country by the way. Don’t be content to just let someone quote a sound bite and stick with your point of view. firstly, black liberation theology came into being because of the issue of racism black people faced in the 60’s and has continued because of the racism (although lesser) today. Churches were segregated not by blacks but by whites who did not want blacks in their churches. the liberal or tolerant white churches allowed blacks in the balcony but still. Now i realize that you may never change your mind, but i believe that you need to research and even guest attend (more than once) a black church before you get set in your opinion. Not to be confrontational, but, how many black friends do you have? have you visited their houses? Have you fellowshipped with them? Lets try to really and truly understand what happens in the black community yesterday and today before we condemn an (out of context) statement out of hand.

thank you for posting this. I never doubted him not once. I am a black femaled and this is what the black church is about. Sorry this offends some people but it offends numerous black people when you down what he has said without listending to the whole serm. I understand the black church but the majority of white people will not understand the black church until you have come to visit the church. Black people feel so left out and feel that others do not understand how we feel. So our southern black people put it all into context for us with meaning and guidance for us. It is not to divide but people do worship differently.

This does put it in context. He damns imperilaism and the romans before damning America. That makes it okay! Its okay to claim that America put AIDs in cities to kill black people, so long as he denounces old empires!

Anyone who promotes this idea that they are being unnaturally stiffled and a victim is only hurting their community. With regards to the second, “Chickens” video. I would like to see the text of both his and the ambassadors to compare what he is and is not quoting. He sounds like he starts with the “Chickens have come home to roost” quote, then attributes rediculous assertions about American actions towards this quote.

the context isn’t that much different than the soundbites. the man is anti-american and distorts facts to advance his agenda. all you need to do is here the line about hiroshima to know this man has no clue. anyone who knows a thing about WWII would know that using the nuclear bomb was necessary in order to save possibly millions of lives.

I think it is ludicris to call someone anti-american just because they dare to be critical instead of blindingly loyal. You criticize someone you love in order to make them better. Surely this nation, run by imperfect men, is not above making mistakes. America does have blemishes on its past. They (the American government)did experiments on soldiers allowing them to be at ground zero during nuclear testing. the tuskee airmen were experimented on with respect to syphillis (by our government). Drugs were sold in the african american community by the cia (Iran-Contra) in 1985-86. We are human beings and our government is run by human beings who make mistakes and sometimes grievious errors in judgement. Let’s not make people un-patriotic because they dare to bring bad judgement to light. You don’t like what he says fine, but let’s not demonize and call reverend wright unpatriotic. Lastly, all of the “fall in line and back our government because they say so” is scarily similar to the way the german people were made to fall in line behind the ideas of hitler. We must always question, especially our government, even when it is uncomfortable to do so. It is our duty as americans to question our government’s actions when they are suspect.

I should hope that Obama denouncing Reverend Wright’s speeches w/o actually hearing them will open your eyes and show that he is not what he seems, to marginalize your own pastor’s dead on comments about injustices in this world done by governments and having the audacity to defend those words shows what a weak leader Obama would really be, do we really want a president who shrugs away from controversy and panders to the right-wing media bias? I know I don’t.

I am really surprised overthe reaction of the Americans to a Sound Bite.I thought that an enlightened group of people would have sought to look deeper before making the type of analysis they have.obviously Rev WRIGHT IS A VERY INTELLIGENT MAN. not THAT AN INTELLIGENT INDIVIDUAL CANNOT MAKE STUPID COMMENTS.,However having read some of the sermons in its entirity, i believe the reaction may be just the white establishment trying to find a reason for keeping a Black out ot the WHITE HOUSE. Even if Rev had a problem with the US Government Why is his fat being used to fry someone else. I always thought that free speech was a right acorded under the constitution I believe that the reaction is because people fear the truth and in a lot of what Mr.Wright said, the truth was wrapped.
