   I’m with you. I couldn’t believe it when they invaded Gaza yesterday. And Darth Cheney just said Israel didn’t ask permission from the US before doing so.

   So is America standing with Israel? That’s what I want to know.

   Mash, I’m with you. With an election coming up and Hamas offering something that they actually could not refuse but ARE (a long term truce accepting 1967 borders, I wrote about that), they just keep squeezing Gaza and make every reaction based on the refusal of allowing food in, a reason to go in and say ‘see?’ They are attacking us. The fact that they’ve driven ordinary citizens to the brink of destruction and starvation (oxfam report) is conveniently forgotten and ignored, also my msm media for the most part.

   The real reason for this desire of total land grab and attempted genocide of a people is not so ‘romantic’ or religious, but as usual, very conveniently cloaked in terms like that (our promised land, we have the righ to ‘defend ourselves’ etc) is simply this; water resources. Coupled with a continued open door policy (law of return) they simply need the land and water in order to accomodate their own citizenry. Not to mention with various production companies, like here, you need a lot of water. Their arid region makes for a serious need for sustainable practices in the best of times. However, instead of being truly honestly spiritually Jewish, they have the might to ‘make right’. Like elsewhere, when you do not have the moral right, people will continue to fight you, be it sticks and stones literally, or getting weaponry from your enemy’s enemy (arab saying ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend) in order to fight back. You cannot expect to poke a dog and not expect it to bear its teeth, let alone bark and/or bite. But then, in the case of Israel, it’s considered a great excuse to poke more. After all, who in the Western world’s media is going to seriously call them to back off? There never is any true retribution from the int’l community..

   On British news, I just saw Obama say something very strange, which rather expressly suggests that Obama condones, along with the outgoing President George W. Bush, whatever the Israelis are doing.

   Ingrid and Robbie, I think Olmert has put himself in quite a pickle. I think the only options now available to him are a prolonged reoccupation of Gaza or a face-saving deal that gives Hamas what they were asking for in the first place – the removal of the blockade of Gaza. I think the best Israel can do is bring in international monitors on the border crossings and declare “victory”.

   But, Hamas will likely be standing if we see a cease-fire. Israelis will once again be asking if all the deaths were worth it. Olmert is an idiot.

   Muhamad, I am actually very encouraged by Obama’s silence. Unlike Mumbai, he hasnt come out with a statement that supported the Bush admin position. On Mumbai, it was easy to be on the same page on the attacks. On the Gaza attack, it is natural for American politicians to come out in unconditional support of Israel. Obama has not done so, and it seems to me, if he backed the Bush position, he would have come out and said so at little political cost to him. So, I find his silence encouraging.

   Now, on the other hand, Obama does have people like Hillary Clinton – hawkish on Israel – in his cabinet. So, I am encouraged but not convinced of Obama’s direction.
