  1. My understanding is that the father and brother have weapons and they do the shooting, not the Marine. It is clearly insensitive, but it shouldn’t be made into the huge story it is becoming. There are more important things to worry about than one song.

  2. Mash says:

The lyrics, according to MSNBC, and my hearing say that the Marine shoots the girl’s sister in the head, and then shoots the father and brother.

The Marine Corps have not confirmed that the guy singing is actually a Marine. I hope that this is some guy in a basement pretending to be a Marine. I think YouTube has removed the video.

If it is for real, the concern is not just the song, but the crowd reaction.

  3. It doesn’t surprise me. I know some guys who are back from Iraq, and most have nothing but contempt for Iraqis. And they aren’t inherently bad guys — they were in a horrific situation, and they’re coping with it by dehumanizing the people they had to deal with there. I’m not making excuses for them; I’m just saying the lyrics and the crowd reaction does not surprise me.

  4. Bengali Fob says:

Things go on the Internet so easily these days. Watch out! Someone might be videotaping you right now!

  5. Ingrid says:

You know Bengalifob..that is actually funny. No critique intended Mash but I think there is almost too much accessable video and hence, too many ‘little’ stories coming out. It is important to remember the big picture and the big picture is as Betty said, the coping mechanism that it represents (which I can imagine), and as Bengalifob says..anything or anyone can become ‘video worthy’ and then stories become triter and triter..oops, bad english..more trite! (as PC alludes to)
Yes Mash, the crowd’s reaction is freaky..but..there are plenty of freaky reactions here when you watch patriotic comedy…eekh!

  6. Mash says:

Ingrid, I think the song and reaction are pretty normal. If you send Marines in to fight an enemy, they have to be able to dehumanize them a little. And joking is a pretty good outlet.

The problem is who we are defining as the “enemy”. I suspect we are defining the enemy as all Iraqi people. If that is the case, we are in some real trouble. At the same time, you cannot send a blunt instrument like the Marines to do the deft work of counter-insurgency and nation building.

This was a problem with this invasion from the beginning. This video is symptomatic of a larger problem as evidenced by my previous post.

  7. Robbie says:

Before we tread into the comedy waters, remember that the right considers the hate speech of Ann Coulter “comedy”. [-(

  8. Ingrid says:

True Mash and yes, true Robbie.
Btw..I read an interesting piece in Times magazine whilst at the doctors’ and it was Robert Baer’s account on how ‘we’ could improve the CIA..it had to do with intelligence gatherers being professionals from the field, and not some bureaucrat who could not decipher or distinguish the good from the ‘bad’ guy. I had to think of your video. And of all those ‘bureaucrats’ who are responsible for the war and for allowing torture..what do they know? Of course, there is always that little something of hidden motives..there being a bleep load of oil in Iraq an all…:-”

  9. Mash says:

    Ingrid, there’s oil in Iraq???:d

Robbie, I have heard so many wingnuts come to Ann Coulter’s defense that I am close to vomiting. I guess you can justify any hate by saying “oh, she means well.”

I REALLY REALLY miss Clinton/Lewinsky. Those were much simpler days.

  10. Robbie says:

Monica Lewinsky meant well, too. :d
