Two days after Ken Starr sent his report to Congress on September 9, 1998 President Bill Clinton told a room full of clerics at the White House: "I have sinned". Amongst those invited to hear Bill Clinton confess his sins was the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. The New York Times reports:

With tears in his eyes, President Clinton told a roomful of clerics this morning that he had sinned, speaking just hours before the world was presented a painstaking account by prosecutors of when, where and how.

Addressing an annual prayer breakfast at the White House, Mr. Clinton drew on the New Testament, the Yom Kippur liturgy and Ernest Hemingway as he made his most abject confession yet of personal failure, while declaring that he would defend and redeem his Presidency.

”I don’t think there is a fancy way to say that I have sinned,” he admitted softly, saying that after resisting expressions of contrition he had reached ”the rock-bottom truth of where I am.”

For the first time, Mr. Clinton also asked for forgiveness from Monica S. Lewinsky, on the day that the details of their intimate relationship — details that he had denied and struggled to suppress — poured out through the Internet, whose wonders as a tool of communication he has so often extolled.

”It is important to me,” the President told the prayer meeting, ”that everybody who has been hurt know that the sorrow I feel is genuine: first, and most important, my family; also my friends, my staff, my Cabinet, Monica Lewinsky and her family, and the American people. I have asked all for their forgiveness.”

 Hillary Clinton was in attendance.

Nice find. It should now say, “Forgive me, Reverend. I have lied.”

  2. Mash says:

Robbie, the picture showed up on DKos a little while ago. It was originally on this blog, but the picture and the associated post has mysteriously disappeared.

But now Ben Smith at Politico has picked up the story. And of course Matt Drudge.

When I was searching the back story, it turned out that this was the prayer breakfast immediately after the Starr report came out.

Since Hillary Clinton and her campaign is trying to character assasinate Senator Obama over his links to Jeremiah Wright, it only made sense to point out her husband confessed to Reverend Wright at the White House, with the First Lady in attendance.

Lanny Davis’s post last night was simply pathetic. And the NYT confirmed last night that the Hillary campaign is using the Wright story as a fear tactic with the superdelegates.

    Mash,

It’s time to call bullshit on Taylor Marsh. I found two videos that contain the full context of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sermons on DU. Give them a click and feel free to post them.

The mainstream media’s failure to do its due diligence makes my blood boil.

  4. Mash says:

Robbie, you are right about the BS. When I hear Democrats parrotting Faux News talking points, its a little much.

I’ll check out the videos and post them here.

Watch Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s 9-11 sermon in context
Already 180,000 people have watched this video

How can anyone take Hillary serious when every other wird out of her mouth is a lie, or in her language ‘she misspoke.’ Can we have another President that commonly misspeaks with the lives of the American people in their hands? She is horrible and how many times can she throw a rock and hide her hand! She needs to pull out of the race and give the democratic party a chance!

  7. Marie says:

So the comment should be that after Hillary said, “she would have changed churches” after Rev. Wright’s comments; then why did she not change husband’s after the Monica Lewinsky incident and her husband, initially, lying about that?

  8. Moniker says:

Poor Bill, I feel his groing – I mean pain.

  9. So, why doesn’t the Obama campaign manage to get this out without looking petty?! It seems the mainstream media has no interest. People need to know this stuff.

There is another thing that makes me go “hmmmmmm?” That is the fact that Bill Clinton has been a “wannabe” black person for most of his pubic life. With the number of African-American church services he’s attended and his purported closeness with the black community (his multi-million dollar office in Harlem and all) there is simply no way he and Hillary had not heard comments like this before and probably shouted “Amen!” with the rest of the congregation.

    How do you spell hypocrite?

looks like Copeland is fighting back with a website of his own. I can’t say that I blame him. This article recently came out in Dallas Star Telegram..

  11. Bill Clinton speech – test skills for Obama !!!

While Bill Clinton’s speech on the third night of the convention will only be a courtesy accorded former presidents, Obama — who speaks tomorrow, the last night of the convention — needs his support desperately.

No body’s perfect… What’s important is the way how we learn from our mistakes.
