State Department Follies

The word is that Barack Obama has offered the Secretary of State job to Hillary Clinton. Perhaps. But I doubt it.

Apparently Hillary Clinton met with Obama yesterday. Since then Washington has been abuzz with the possibility of a "Team of Rivals". The Washington hacks cannot wait to make Doris Kearns Goodwin’s excellent book about Abraham Lincoln play out live.

It is worth noting that Obama met with Bill Richardson today. Richardson is a top contender for Secretary of State. He is an experienced diplomat, solid Obama supporter, and unlikely to create a separate power center – with its own agenda separate from the president of the United States – at Foggy Bottom. It is also worth noting that there have been no leaks about whether Obama has offered anything to Richardson.

It seems to me that Hillary Clinton’s supporters are jumping up and down a little too much trying to push the story about Obama offering Clinton the position. Maybe they think they can publicly pressure Obama into giving Clinton the job. Something similar occurred before Obama picked his vice president. If there is so much public advocacy before she gets the job, one wonders what kind of shenanigans will go on after she gets the job. It is all too much drama and not enough substance – too much ambition and not enough diplomacy.

If I had to bet, I’d bet on the quiet guy getting the job. The guy who doesn’t leak before getting the job is likely to be just as diplomatic and loyal after he gets the job.

So, I’d bet on Bill Richardson.

I hope you’re right. Giving SOS to Hillary is like giving in to extortion.

I think she would be better off as part of SCOTUS

    Mash Bhai,

Is Bill Richardson not the same guy who traveled Bangladesh post 1/11?

    Mash,

James seems to think that Hillary wants to be on the Supreme Court,

    me..I don’t know..

but it would be a good place to ‘put her’..
enough power and advocacy for her although the Republicans would about keel over. That said, ‘we’ do think she’d be good at it..

    Ingrid
    great analysis

Ergh. As much as I didn’t love her for President, I also don’t love her for SOS, and yet, the thought of Supreme Court? Don’t love that either.

Can’t they give her HUD or EPA or something?

Sorry guys, got busy for a couple of days and was not able to respond. I just posted a new one on Hillary that summarizes my thoughts.

Hillary on the court has been bandied around and I think that would certainly be a good pick. Now, with Harry Reid making a fool out of himself, Clinton may be looking at majority leader in the Senate.
