These Songs Of Freedom

Iraq Veterans Against War

BBC aired a documentary on March 29, 2006 about an anti-war march that some Iraq War veterans took across the South to protest the war. Here is a Daily Kos diary by theyrereal that discusses the march. Click on the image above to launch the video.

There are many victims in a war. And in an illegitimate war there can be no winners. There is a moment in the video (9:14 minutes into the video) that sums up the futility of our effort in Iraq. It is painful to watch.

To borrow a phrase, we are at a "turning point" in this war. I wrote a few days ago that President Bush and Prime Minister Blair had declared defeat in Iraq. The recent confluence of events I think brings that notion home. My hope is that we will not lose many more innocent souls (both American and Iraqi) to this misadventure as the Pax Americana in Iraq continues to collapse.

Here below are the lyrics to Bob Marley’s "Redemption Song". So won’t you help to sing these songs of freedom…

Old pirates yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I from the
Bottom less pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the almighty
We forward in this generation triumphantly
All I ever had is songs of freedom
Won’t you help to sing these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book

Won’t you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Yes some say it’s just part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book

Won’t you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs
All I ever had, redemption songs
These songs of freedom, songs of freedom

Peace

Mash, I saw about 16 minutes worth and I kept getting sadder and sadder. The main point made by several iraq veterans; how dehumanizing it was and how they were taught to dehumanize it. It is very disheartening to see how some of those conservative yokels from Mississippi (“my dad is right because he knows everything”..is that what that one girl said? Dumbass dad:-w, anyhow…to hear that one veteran lost his friends because they don’t want to talk about it (his Iraq experience) and how they feel so many people do not care..they don’t. It is obviously apparent and painful. Jacques Ellul, a french philosopher wrote Truth and Propaganda , I believe in the ’50s (correct me if I’m wrong) and to oversimplify his book, in essence you cannot convince people of something they are totally opposed to. That dumbass dad, if he were to see the evidence right in front of his schnazz he’d refuse to accept it. In order to make people accept the ‘unacceptable’..you need to nudge them, little by little, towards the direction you want them to go to. I feel it’s the same with bringing real awareness to the American public re. torture. You almost need to tell them about it indirectly, because the majority will not be able(i.e. willing) to accept it.
    Great find, that video Mash,
    kudos as usual,
    Ingrid
