Light Posting

In case you have been wondering why I haven’t been posting on (torture!, swine flu!, specter!, pakistan!, sunita paul!, bangladesh!), its because I have been a little under the weather for the past week that has kept me from work and the blog. A lot has happened and I’ve not been able to write about it. So, in short:

  • Torture sucks. US did torture. If Obama fails to prosecute, he is giving a green light to every other country in the world to torture at will. The Obama administration is in real danger of making torture acceptable.
  • Swine flu sucks. Its already here in Washington. I expect if it enters the school system in Virginia, my daughter’s school will shut down. I think it is better to lose millions in operating costs than billions in trying to treat victims of a full blown pandemic. The good news is that it appears to be not as contagious as originally thought: none of the family members of the boy in Texas who died have the flu. The other good news is it appears to be mild in the US. We’ll have to wait for more information before we understand the damage H1N1 can do now, and when it comes  back in the fall.
  • Great that he is a Democrat, but Senate Democrats suck pretty badly anyway. So, what is there to celebrate? If the goal is to expand the caucus, good job. But if the goal is to help the American people, EPIC FAIL. The problem in the Senate has been Democrats – Republicans have been an excuse. Now the Democrats has one less excuse as they continue to screw the American people.
  • The Islamist problem in Pakistan is not new. It is a decades old problem. Really, it has been a problem since the formation of Pakistan. America is only now pretending to understand it. The way you get at Pakistani Islamists is through the Pakistan army. But as usual, I suspect, America will do the opposite of what will be useful. The ill-fated American Ambassador doing cartwheels with General Zia-ul-Haq did not convince the Americans. This episode will not be either. Obama is listening to the wrong people.
  • Did I tell you Sunita Paul is a fraud? Now everyone else thinks so too. It looks like she got bumped from American Chronicle because of her blatant plagiarism, so now she is writing at a group blog called Modern Ghana, who apparently don’t care about copyright violations. I am sure ModernGhana’s domain registrar will care. Sunita Paul is now relegated to writing whining pieces complaining about how she cant get published.
  • US government praises Bangladesh for how minority’s are treated. The current government deserves credit for moving in the right direction. But much remains to be done. Minority rights are still not fully respected in Bangladesh, for that the current government must take responsibility and blame. I urge the current government to make this – the founding promise of Bangladesh – an ongoing effort until Bangladeshis are all guaranteed, not in theory but as a matter of practice, their full rights as human beings. Thirty Eight years is too long to wait for a birthright.

I’ll ease back into posting as I feel a bit better. In the meantime, it looks like the commenters are keeping this place warm with their charm, wit, name calling and other abilities.

Sunita Paul Continues To Plagiarize

It appears that “Sunita Paul” cannot help herself. Even after facing charges of plagiarism, she continues to plagiarize.

According to “Sunita Paul”‘s bio on American Chronicle, she is “considered as an expert of South Asian affairs, counter-terrorism and international relations.” However, when writing about militants in Bangladesh she plagiarizes published and copyrighted articles from Bangladesh’s leading English language newspaper, The Daily Star. There is of course irony in her stealing copyrighted content from The Daily Star and claiming it for her own because she has attacked The Daily Star as “evil” in her published work.

Now, to the latest case of brazen plagiarism from “Sunita Paul”. In an article published today on the American Chronicle entitled “Silent rise of Hizb Ut Towhid”, she plagiarized massively from two Daily Star articles. Almost the entire article is plagiarized, without any attribution, from these two articles. It is a stunning example of plagiarism.

The two articles from the Daily Star that she plagiarized from are from Daily Star’s series of investigative articles examining militant groups in Bangladesh. The first article, published on August 28, 2005, was written by Zayadul Ahsan and is entitled “Inside the Militant Groups-7: Profiles show them interlinked”. The second article, published on October 26, 2008, was written by Julfikar Ali Manik and Shariful Islam and is entitled “Tackling militancy gets tough for policy”. She plagiarized at least 5 paragraphs from the 2005 Daily Star article and 14 paragraphs from the 2008 Daily Star article.

To illustrate the plagiarism, take a look at the following three paragraphs from “Sunita Paul”‘s article from today:

The HuT chief, who left Bangladesh after the independence and returned in the ’80s, published a book titled “This Islam is not at all Islam” in March 1996, which the government banned on May 10, 1998. … Besides, there are several leaflets and booklets on the HuT ideologies and objective. Followers of HuT do not believe in democracy and traditional government system.

HuT activists use iron hammer and tobacco dust when they attack. They used a hammer to kill one Abdul Malek in Pagla Bazar in Fatulla, Narayangaj on September 26, 2003 when local devotees protested the HuT activities. Followers of this extremist group term Azan as “bark of dog” and do not say prayers in mosques. They consider Islamic greetings or Salaam as “bad practice”.

Mahbub Ali, Kushtia district HT ameer, has been working along with 40/50 activists. Sohrab Hossain Khan of Sakukuthi village in Gouranadi upazila of Barisal, an absconding accused of a murder case, has also been leading HT activities from hideouts.

Now, look at the original 5 paragraphs from the 2005 Daily Star article:

The HT chief, who left the country after the independence and returned in the ’80s, published a book titled “This Islam is not at all Islam” in March 1996, which the government banned on May 10, 1998. Ponni challenged the ban but the matter is yet to be resolved.

He also published some booklets and leaflets on HT ideologies and objectives. His followers do not believe in traditional government system.

The HT activists use iron hammer and gul (tobacco dust) when they attack. They used a hammer to kill one Abdul Malek in Pagla Bazar in Fatulla, Narayangaj on September 26, 2003 when local devotees protested the HT activities.

HT followers term ajan “barking of dog” and do not say their prayers at mosques. They never exchange salam (Islamic greetings).

Mahbub Ali, Kushtia district HT ameer, has been working along with 40/50 activists. Sohrab Hossain Khan of Sakukuthi village in Gouranadi upazila of Barisal, an absconding accused of a murder case, has also been leading HT activities from hideouts.

The paragraphs are lifted wholesale from the 2005 Daily Star article.

The plagiarism from the 2008 Daily Star article is even more blatant. “Sunita Paul” lifted, nearly intact, the last 14 paragraphs from the Daily Star article. To illustrate, I will show the first few plagiarized paragraphs below. The reader can examine the articles to see the totality of the plagiarism.

In her April 14 article, “Sunita Paul” writes:

For the last few years Hizb Ut Towhid has been carrying out secret operations in the name of ‘dawat’ in different parts of the country, especially in the southern region. In some cases Bangladeshi law enforcing agencies also arrested some activists of different Islamic organizations during their suspicious activities.

For instance, law enforcers arrested a few Hizb Ut Towhid activists in Bhola in September 2008 for their suspicious movement.

Commenting on HuT, an officer of Bangladesh Police said, “We’re closely monitoring their activities. The nature of their activities in Bhola suggests the organization might have some activities similar to those of banned militant organizations.”

He said the outfit seems suspicious as Hizb Ut Towhid’s activities have similarity with the activities and groundwork of banned militant organizations.

Now, examine the paragraphs from the 2008 Daily Star article that she plagiarized from:

For the last few years Hizb-ut Towhid has been carrying out secret operations in the name of ‘dawat’ in different parts of the country, especially in the southern region.

In some cases police also arrested some activists of different Islamic organisations during their suspicious activities.

For instance, law enforcers arrested a few Hizb-ut Towhid activists in Bhola in early September for their suspicious movement.

Superintendent of Police of Bhola GM Azizur Rahman told The Daily Star over phone that Hizb-ut Towhid has recently started its activities in the district.

“We’re closely monitoring their activities. The nature of their activities in Bhola suggests the organisation might have some activities similar to those of banned militant organisations,” Azizur observed.

He said the outfit seems suspicious as Hizb-ut Towhid’s activities have similarity with the activities and groundwork of banned militant organisations.

As you can see, the plagiarism is clear.

It is quite stunning that “Sunita Paul” continues to plagiarize even after being exposed on multiple cases of plagiarism. She continues to steal other people’s work. She is trying to claim to be an “expert” by stealing investigative work done by hard working journalists and claiming the work as her own. That is dishonest. That is fraudulent.

As Shada Kalo pointed out in his post, “Sunita Paul” claims she does not plagiarize and has never violated copyright. It is clear now, that in addition to being a plagiarist, she is a liar.

UPDATE The article on American Chronicle has now been deleted. It is still available on Google cache. The website ModernGhana.com (of all places) is also still hosting this article.

Neel Kashkari Is Out

About a month ago I questioned why Neel Kashkari – the incompetent Treasury official in charge of the TARP program – was still employed. Today, we got some good news.

Neel Kashkari is gone:

Herbert M. Allison Jr., the chief executive of Fannie Mae for the last six months, has emerged as a candidate to become the next head of the financial bailout program, government officials said.

If nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Allison would succeed Neel T. Kashkari, who has stepped down as assistant treasury secretary for financial stability, a position created last year as part of the bailout effort.

Mr. Allison worked for Merrill Lynch for almost 30 years, rising to the positions of president and chief operating officer. He later ran the finance committee for Senator John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign and became the chairman and chief executive of TIAA-Cref, the large money management company.

Kashkari, also known as “Mini-Paulson“, is gone. That can only be a good thing.

Sunita Paul: More Plagiarism

I guess I am not the only one who “Sunita Paul” plagiarizes. It appears that she even plagiarizes big name reporters.

Consider the April 5, 2009 article by “Sunita Paul” in the American Chronicle entitled “DPRK: Missile-Satellite Controversy” – one of the very few articles not focused on Bangladesh. The article is about the North Korean missile launch. But as I read it, it felt very disjointed and parts of it were vaguely familiar. It read very much like an article written by Helene Cooper of the New York Times. This article was first published on April 5th with Helene Cooper’s byline and then was later augmented with reporting by David Sanger and published on the front page of the April 6 edition of the New York Times. I remembered the article because it caused quite a buzz when it came out. The original article, with only Helene Cooper on the byline, is still available online.

The Helene Cooper article consists of 13 paragraphs. “Sunita Paul” lifted 11 of the 13 paragraphs from Helene Cooper’s article and included them in her American Chronicle article. Nowhere in “Sunita Paul”‘s article is Ms. Cooper or the New York Times given credit. Now, it is possible that the New York Times and Helene Cooper decided to waive copyright and give the entire contents of their original work to “Sunita Paul” to publish as if the words were written by her, but I very much doubt that. It is much more likely that “Sunita Paul” has plagiarized the New York Times article and tried to pass it off as her own writing.

Since pretty much the entire article was plagiarized, I will not reprint the entire New York Times article here. Instead, I will offer a few examples to illustrate the plagiarism. The reader can compare both articles to see the 11 paragraphs that were taken from the New York Times article.

Below is a paragraph from “Sunita Paul”‘s article:

The U.S. president also said that he still plans to continue with plans to pursue missile defense, but tied the need for such a system to any Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons. Russia opposes locating a defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, as current plans call for, and Mr. Obama said in a letter to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev two months ago that if Russia is able to successfully help the United States stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, there will be no need for a missile defense shield in placed in Eastern Europe.

Here is the original paragraph from the New York Times article:

Mr. Obama also said that he still planned to continue plans to pursue missile defense, but he tied the need for such a system to any Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons. Russia opposes locating a defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, as current plans call for, and Mr. Obama said in a letter to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev two months ago that if Russia were able to help the United States stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, there would be no need for a missile defense shield in in Eastern Europe.

Here is a paragraph from “Sunita Paul”‘s article:

The issue has particular resonance here in Prague, since the now-collapsed government of Prime Minister Marek Topolanek went to bat against popular opinion here to support the missile shield, only to have the Obama administration begin to walk back from the plan.

Here is the original paragraph from the New York Times article:

The issue has particular resonance here in Prague, since the now collapsed government of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek went to bat against popular opinion here to support the missile shield, only to have the Obama administration begin to walk back from the plan.

Here is a paragraph from “Sunita Paul”‘s article:

That North Korea fired a rocket over Japan and into the Pacific just hours before President Obama´s speech lent his message an added urgency, He said, although White House officials disputed any suggestion that the secretive government in the North timed its rocket launch to coincide with the U.S. President´s speech.

Here is the original paragraph from the New York Times article:

That North Korea had fired a rocket over Japan and into the Pacific just hours before Mr. Obama’s speech lent his message an added urgency, Mr. Obama said, although White House officials disputed any suggestion that the secretive government in the North timed its rocket launch to coincide with Mr. Obama’s speech.

As you can see from the above examples, the plagiarism is blatant.

In response to my op-ed in the Daily Star, “Sunita Paul” published in the American Chronicle a scathing ad hominem attack on me. Leaving aside for the purposes of this post the libelous vitriol contained in that article, I found the following passage in the article to be of great interest:

Mashuqur Rahman calls me a plagarist and cheat. He did not cite one example behind such nasty allegation. I have never violated any copyright of any publication, ever. Wherefrom he invented this plagarism theory?

As the reader will recall, I documented in detail the paragraphs “Sunita Paul” plagiarized from my articles. Yet, she now claims she has never plagiarized or violated copyright. Interestingly, the article that I had linked to at the American Chronicle has mysteriously disappeared after my op-ed came out. However, the article, though now deleted, lives on in Google cache as testimony of her plagiarism. The offending article is also still available, for now, on Global Politician and Priyo.com. For more on “Sunita Paul”‘s attack on me, read Shada Kalo’s excellent post.

So, it is likely that this new article by “Sunita Paul” may also mysteriously disappear since the plagiarism has been exposed. However, it will live on in Google cache.

As I have noted before, plagiarism is dishonesty. As more evidence of plagiarism arises, the level of dishonesty becomes self-evident.

UPDATE The article on American Chronicle has now been deleted. The article is still available on Google cache. The article is also currently posted at ModernGhana.com.

Who Is ‘Sunita Paul’?

Today The Daily Star published my op-ed “Who is ‘Sunita Paul’?” The op-ed expands on my post on Sunita Paul from last week.

The full op-ed follows:

———–

Who is ‘Sunita Paul’?

“SUNITA PAUL” is an “Indian journalist” who has been writing inflammatory articles on Bangladesh in little known foreign online outlets. “Sunita Paul” is also a plagiarist – a cheat.

“Sunita Paul” has caused quite a stir recently because her articles make extraordinary claims, based on anonymous sources and apparent hearsay, about the political situation in Bangladesh. Extraordinary claims without much factual support require a significant leap of faith by the reader. Whether they should be believed completely depend on her credibility.

The very persona of “Sunita Paul” is somewhat of a mystery. “Sunita Paul” is listed as a writer for the Weekly Blitz, the tabloid run by Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury. She also rather coincidentally writes in a number of online publications – American Chronicle, Global Politician and Asian Tribune – that also publish Mr. Choudhury’s articles. She holds strongly negative views about Bangladesh, and has published articles maliciously claiming Bangladesh to be anti-American, anti-Western, and anti-Semitic.

On March 30, 2008, “Sunita Paul” published an article in the Asian Tribune entitled “They Hate US-West Too.” By “they,” she refers to Bangladesh. In the opening sentence of the article, she makes this extraordinary charge: “Bangladesh, although demanding to be a moderate Muslim nation, is in reality a notorious Jew hater and anti West and anti American nation.”

She goes on to write that “people of Bangladesh in general are West and US haters and the only reason for them for sending their children to these countries are for mere money making.”

Note that she is not pointing towards any particular group or party, she is charging Bangladesh as a country, and all Bangladeshis as “Jew hater and anti West and anti American nation.”

The thrust of that article is to push Bangladesh to change its policy toward Israel. She questions whether the United States should do business at all with Bangladesh. She writes: “Can we raise a plain question as to whether the Jewish business communities and friends of Israel like United States should patronize Dhaka economically to sharpen and strengthen their anti Semitic and anti US sentiments?”

While writing inflammatory articles on Bangladesh, “Sunita Paul” often uses unverifiable sources for her claims, uses unchecked propaganda, and most notoriously, steals from other people’s work and claims them as her own.

When a journalist is engaged in plagiarism – that is when a journalist makes false claims of authorship – the remainder of that journalist’s work should be viewed with extreme suspicion. Plagiarism is dishonesty. And “Sunita Paul” is a plagiarist. She is a cheat.

On February 6, “Sunita Paul” published an article in the online publication American Chronicle with the breathless headline “Ruling party getting set to try Bangladesh Generals.” Now, if the claim in the article’s headline were true, this would be big news.

However, the article was thin on backing up the main charge in the headline. As one reads further through the long article though, one comes across a number of paragraphs that seemed very familiar to this author. For a very good reason. The paragraphs were originally written by me in two October 2007 articles. [The articles, titled”Banking: Junta Edition” and “In Denial” are available at:http://www.e-bangladesh.org/2007/10/page/4/]

“Sunita Paul” copied, word for word, five paragraphs that I had written in 2007 and passed them off as her own writing in 2009. No citation was given, nor did she put the passages in quotations. In other words, she has stolen someone else’s words and claimed them as her own. Not only did she plagiarise, she also used copyrighted material without the author’s consent.

It is clear that “Sunita Paul” is a “journalist” with an agenda – an agenda that wants to portray Bangladesh negatively in the West and in the United States. A “journalist” with such a political agenda is no journalist at all. In addition, she is a cheat. Her journalistic ethics are in serious question.

Yet, a number of prominent people in Bangladesh, including the leader of the opposition in Parliament, have cited the articles of “Sunita Paul” that fuel unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about the recent massacre at Pilkhana. The same person who wrote malicious propaganda against Bangladesh is now being given credence in spreading unsubstantiated conspiracy theories that will hamper fair, neutral investigation of the BDR massacre. It should however be clear to everyone that this so-called journalist’s agenda is counter to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.

Given the corrosive agenda of “Sunita Paul” and her proven plagiarism, the reader should question her breathless articles on Bangladesh.
